Green Earth Developments Group Partners with Sterling Capital Asset Finance Ltd. and Others to Upgrade Landfill Gas Engines at Whitehead Restoration Site

by Krystal

In a bid to enhance efficiency and reduce energy losses, Green Earth Developments Group has collaborated with Sterling Capital Asset Finance Ltd., Environ Consultants Ltd., and Landfill Projects Ltd. to revamp the landfill gas engines and electrical circuits at the Whitehead Restoration Site.

The previous gas engines, deemed oversized for the current gas generation levels at the landfill site, were operating at less than 25% efficiency, resulting in substantial energy wastage. Moreover, the electricity generated was being exported to the national grid instead of being utilized onsite.

The newly implemented solution features a more compact and efficient containerized Scania 250kW engine, projected to operate at over 90% efficiency. Notably, the electricity generated will now be consumed onsite for the leachate plant and other essential site services.

Previously, the engines generated approximately 2000 MWh of electricity per year. With the site’s current consumption standing at around 750MWh annually, it is anticipated that the site will now rely entirely on electricity generated from the waste landfill gas. This initiative aligns with the classification of capturing, cleaning, and utilizing landfill gas for power generation as renewable energy.
