Stellantis has made a major move toward sustainability by announcing that its entire range of cars and light-duty commercial vehicles in Europe can now run on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) Diesel, also known as “green Diesel.” This update enables Stellantis owners with eligible models to use a cleaner, renewable fuel that reduces emissions without requiring any modifications to their engines.
Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) Diesel is a biofuel made from renewable resources, such as used vegetable oils, waste cooking oils, and animal fats. The fuel is produced through a hydrogenation process, which turns it into a sulfur-free alternative to traditional Diesel, with lower levels of pollutants. Unlike conventional Diesel, HVO Diesel cuts down carbon emissions while maintaining the same level of power, fuel efficiency, and engine performance.
Stellantis vehicles with Euro 5 and Euro 6 engines, including many existing models, are now validated for HVO compatibility. Cars with the “XTL” label on their fuel filler necks are already approved for HVO Diesel, allowing drivers to switch to this sustainable fuel option with ease.
In addition, several Stellantis engines that do not have the “XTL” marking can still run on HVO Diesel. These include:
1.3-liter MultiJet I-4
1.6-liter MultiJet I-4
2.0-liter MultiJet I-4
2.2 MultiJet I-4 (including the updated 4.0 version)
3.0 MultiJet (EcoDiesel) V6
2.3 MultiJet (F1A – Fiat Ducato) I-4
This wide compatibility means that Stellantis drivers can reduce their environmental impact without having to make significant changes to their vehicles.
Switching to HVO Diesel offers multiple benefits to drivers. It helps reduce carbon emissions, improves local air quality by cutting particulate matter and NOx emissions, and provides the same performance as traditional Diesel. As a renewable fuel, HVO aligns with Stellantis’ sustainability goals and commitment to long-term carbon reduction.
Stellantis’ move to support HVO Diesel compatibility is part of its broader initiative to lower the carbon footprint of its vehicle lineup. By endorsing a sustainable fuel option that works with existing diesel models, Stellantis strengthens its focus on environmentally responsible driving.
With HVO Diesel, Stellantis drivers in Europe can now make a positive environmental impact without compromising vehicle performance. This initiative supports Stellantis’ wider sustainability vision, which includes investing in alternative fuels, expanding electric vehicle (EV) options, and offering advanced solutions that reduce emissions while meeting customer needs.
