Ukraine, Romania, and Bulgaria have agreed to take joint action to address a major environmental disaster in the Black Sea caused by fuel oil pollution.
According to Ukrinform, this was announced by Ukraine’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, citing Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk.
Hrynchuk recently held an online meeting with Romania’s Minister of Environment, Water, and Forests, Mircea Fechet, and Bulgaria’s Acting Minister of Environment and Water, Petar Dimitrov.
The ministers agreed to focus on collaborative efforts to limit the presence of Russia’s aging fleet in the Black Sea, which poses a serious threat to the marine ecosystem.
They also highlighted the lack of reliable information regarding the aftermath of the Russian tanker disaster on December 15, 2024, and the ongoing risk of fuel oil spreading.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection reported that recent satellite images show that pollution from the Russian fuel oil has reached the Yevpatoria region. The Ukrainian Scientific Center for Environmental Monitoring continues to monitor the situation.
