International has announced that its S13 powertrain is now certified for use with renewable diesel, a move that supports the company’s sustainability goals. The announcement was made on Wednesday. Renewable diesel includes fuels like R100/R99 and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). HVO is a renewable fuel made from recycled vegetable oils, tallow, or used cooking oil, which undergoes a hydrotreating process to create a cleaner-burning fuel.
R100 is a paraffinic fuel that lacks oxygen, improving its cold flow properties. Its high cetane number allows for a cleaner burn. According to Michael Noonan, Vice President of Engineering, “Renewable diesel meets the ASTM D975 Diesel Fuel Specification and the EN 15940 Paraffinic Diesel Fuel Specification. It offers better storage capabilities than biodiesel and has lower sulfur and ash content compared to petroleum-based diesel. This results in lower tailpipe emissions, making it a viable option for fleets aiming to meet their sustainability targets.”
The International S13 integrated powertrain is available in the LT, RH, HX, and HV series trucks. It delivers up to 515 horsepower and 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque.
Chet Cieselski, Vice President of National Fleets and Truck Equipment Manufacturers, emphasized the importance of offering flexible solutions to meet the industry’s sustainability goals. “International’s mission is to accelerate the impact of sustainable mobility. Since there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, we provide various options to help customers achieve their individual carbon reduction objectives.”
