LISLE, Ill., Jan. 15, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — International Motors, LLC* (“International”) has announced that its International® S13® Integrated Powertrain is now certified for use with renewable diesel, strengthening the company’s commitment to sustainability.
Renewable diesel, often referred to as R100/R99 or hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), is gaining popularity as a fuel option to help companies reduce their carbon footprint. The fuel supports zero-emission goals by offering a sustainable alternative to traditional diesel.
“Given the industry’s ambitious sustainability goals, International is focused on providing customers with various solutions to support their individual carbon reduction objectives,” said Chet Ciesielski, Vice President of National Fleets and Truck Equipment Manufacturers. “Our mission is to accelerate sustainable mobility, and we understand that one-size-fits-all solutions don’t work for every customer. That’s why we’re committed to offering a range of options to help them meet their goals.”
Renewable diesel, made from recycled vegetable oils, tallow, or used cooking oil, shares a similar chemical structure with traditional diesel, making it a direct replacement. Produced through a hydrotreating process, renewable diesel burns cleaner and reduces carbon emissions, offering a more eco-friendly fuel option without requiring changes to existing S13 diesel engines.
Unlike biodiesel, renewable diesel, or R100, is a paraffinic fuel with no oxygen compounds, which improves its cold flow properties. It also boasts a high Cetane number, resulting in a cleaner burn and making it a high-quality, low-carbon alternative to conventional diesel.
“Renewable diesel meets the ASTM D975 Diesel Fuel Specification and the EN 15940 Paraffinic Diesel Fuel Specification. It also has better storage properties than biodiesel, contains less sulfur and ash than petroleum diesel, and contributes to lower tailpipe emissions,” said Michael Noonan, Vice President of Engineering at International. “This makes renewable diesel an effective tool for fleets working toward their sustainability goals.”
The International S13 Integrated Powertrain is available in the International LT®, RH™, HX®, and HV™ Series trucks. With up to 515 hp and 1,850 lb-ft of torque, the powertrain combines an engine, T14-transmission, and aftertreatment system that work together seamlessly to enhance efficiency, profitability, and sustainability. This innovation sets a new standard for fuel efficiency in the trucking industry.
