Albania, Italy, and UAE Agree on Green Energy Partnership

On Wednesday, Albania, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Italy signed a strategic agreement to cooperate on renewable energy and improve energy infrastructure.

The agreement was signed in Abu Dhabi, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed al Nahyan, and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama present. The signing ceremony also included UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Sultan bin Ahmed al Jaber, Italy’s Minister of Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, and Albania’s Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Energy.

The partnership focuses on strengthening collaboration between the three nations in the renewable energy sector, specifically on large-scale energy projects in Albania and establishing an electricity transmission line linking Albania to Italy.

This agreement, revealed at the High-Level Dialogue on Grid Connections during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, is seen as a major step in improving energy security across the Mediterranean, promoting sustainable development, and advancing the shift to clean energy.

The strategic partnership will focus on developing large renewable energy projects in Albania, including solar, wind, and hybrid solutions, as well as exploring potential battery storage technologies. A significant amount of this energy will be transmitted to Italy.

The pact also includes plans for building a cross-border electricity transmission line between Albania and Italy.

Speaking at the event, Meloni highlighted the importance of the agreement for renewable energy production and transmission. She emphasized that to make the energy transition effective and sustainable, adequate infrastructure is crucial. “Developing interconnections could be the key to a new energy diplomacy, creating more opportunities for cooperation and shared benefits,” she stated.
