Important Milestones Reached in Wind Power Projects with Storage in Turkey

by Krystal

Wind power projects with integrated storage systems are making significant strides across Turkey. Notably, Polat Enerji has selected Rolls-Royce to supply a 132 MWh battery system for the Göktepe wind park, while Traktek Enerji and Kontrolmatik have received approval for environmental impact assessments (EIA) for large-scale investments involving battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Polat Enerji recently completed a smaller battery storage system at its Soma wind park, the largest in Turkey. Following this, the company signed a deal with Rolls-Royce to integrate its mtu QG EnergyPack at the Göktepe wind farm, located near Yalova in northwestern Turkey. This new battery system will provide 132 MWh of storage capacity. The Göktepe facility, with an existing capacity of 121 MW, is set to benefit from this expansion, marking the largest battery storage deal in Turkey to date.

The Turkish government prioritized renewable energy projects with storage in 2022, aiming to balance the variability of wind and solar power. This push has led to a surge in hybrid power plant projects, which are expected to enhance grid stability and flexibility.

In another development, Polat Enerji has also contracted SolarToday to install a 12.8 MW battery storage system at the Ege wind park, with a storage capacity of 15.2 MWh. The contractor iNOVAT will handle the integration and commissioning of the system.

Traktek Enerji has received approval for an EIA study for a 50 MW wind farm with integrated energy storage in Enez, located in Edirne province, Turkey’s European region. The planned wind park will feature 12 turbines, each rated at 3 MW, alongside four 3.5 MW turbines. The project will include a 50 MW, 50 MWh BESS.

Kontrolmatik has also made notable progress with its Çorlu wind power project. The company recently completed the EIA process for this venture, which will pair 250 MW of wind power with a groundbreaking 1 GWh battery storage system. This will be the first gigawatt-scale wind and battery combination in Turkey. The Çorlu wind park, located in Tekirdağ province in East Thrace, is expected to generate 875 GWh annually.

Polat’s Soma wind park, which already has a 288 MW capacity, added a 4 MW, 4 MWh storage unit recently, further solidifying Turkey’s push toward integrating renewable energy with energy storage solutions.
