Tesco Fuel Station Update: Petrol and Diesel Drivers Warned of ‘Maximum’ Limit

by Krystal

Motorists are being warned about a little-known regulation at Tesco petrol stations that could catch drivers off guard during their next visit.

Tesco has strict rules in place that allow customers to fill up to two portable containers per visit, with a combined maximum capacity of 30 litres. This regulation applies to all Tesco fuel stations nationwide. Only approved plastic or metal containers are permitted for fuel purchases. Plastic containers can hold a maximum of 10 litres, while metal containers can hold up to 20 litres.

The combined limit ensures that customers do not exceed the 30-litre capacity per visit.

A Tesco spokesperson explained: “Under the Petroleum Consolidation Regulations, we must have a policy to ensure the safe use of portable fuel containers at our petrol stations. Our policy limits customers to two containers with a maximum combined capacity of 30 litres.”

In addition to these capacity limits, customers must also ensure that all fuel containers meet specific labelling requirements. Each container must clearly display the words “Petrol” and “Highly flammable,” along with a hazard warning symbol. The container’s capacity in litres must also be marked, along with the manufacturer’s name and the date of manufacture.

These labelling guidelines are part of Tesco’s broader safety measures for fuel container use. The supermarket also reminded the public about storage regulations.

A Tesco spokesperson added: “The maximum amount that a private individual can legally store without notifying the Petroleum Enforcement Authority is 30 litres.”

This warning comes just weeks after Labour announced it would not move forward with proposed rule changes designed to help Britons avoid a future fuel crisis. The decision followed a 2023 consultation that explored whether raising the weight limits for fuel tankers could help transport more fuel during supply chain disruptions.
