Nigerian Offshore Fields Cut Routine Gas Flaring by 96%

by Krystal

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has celebrated a major achievement, announcing a 96% reduction in routine gas flaring at its Anyala field in OML 83 and the Madu field in OML 85. This milestone was reached through a joint venture (JV) with First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company (First E&P).

NNPC has hailed this decarbonization effort as a significant step toward Nigeria’s environmental goals, which include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20% unconditionally and 47% conditionally, as outlined in the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

Mele Kyari, CEO of NNPC, emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, “This success highlights our commitment to responsible resource management and meeting energy needs while prioritizing sustainability. It also aligns our operations with global environmental standards.”

The reduction was achieved through an advanced gas reinjection strategy, which stores gas in a designated underground reservoir at the Madu field offshore Bayelsa State. This initiative prevents gas from being flared, significantly reducing its environmental impact.

By curbing gas flaring, the JV complies with the regulations set by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), demonstrating their adherence to national and international environmental standards.

Ademola Adeyemi-Bero, Managing Director and CEO of First E&P, also commented on the achievement, noting, “This milestone shows our commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible energy production. By reducing our carbon footprint, we are helping build a sustainable energy future that benefits both the environment and local communities.”

Looking forward, NNPC and First E&P are focused on commercializing the stored gas and other stranded gas resources in the Niger Delta, further reinforcing their dedication to environmental responsibility and sustainable energy solutions.

In addition, the JV has partnered with Baker Hughes to implement the Leucipa automated field production solution at their offshore operations in the Niger Delta, aimed at managing production and reducing carbon emissions.
