Chiang Rai Authorities Ban Gas Refilling in Containers to Combat Scammers
On Saturday, Chiang Rai authorities announced a ban on filling fuel tanks and other containers with gas to prevent call-center scammers from accessing fuel for electricity generation. The move followed a directive from the National Security Council issued on Wednesday, which aimed to disrupt scam operations in five Myanmar border areas by cutting off their power supply, internet, and fuel exports.
As a result of the order, many Myanmar nationals have crossed the Tachilek border to seek fuel in Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai province, since some gas stations in Tachilek have restricted fuel refills to vehicles and prohibited the use of containers.
The ban, according to Chiang Rai authorities, violates Section 4 of the Fuel Oil Controls Act BE 2544 (2001). Gas station operators are now required to provide fuel only to vehicles. Failure to comply could lead to legal consequences under Thai law.
The restrictions have also impacted local farmers in Mae Sai district. Farmers, who rely on fuel for agricultural machinery like lawn mowers and water pumps, must now obtain permission from municipal authorities for refueling.
