CASTLETON, Vt. — A significant gasoline spill at an Irving Gas Station prompted a HAZMAT response in Castleton on Monday morning, according to the Castleton Police Department.
Police Chief Peter Mantello said the spill occurred around 10 a.m. at the station on Route 30 North. A tanker truck was filling an underground reservoir when a pressure change caused gasoline from another tank to spill onto the street. Officials estimate that between 200 and 500 gallons of gasoline were released.
A HAZMAT team responded to the scene to assess the situation and assist with cleanup efforts.
Preliminary investigations suggest a faulty vapor valve may have caused the spill. However, authorities will not confirm the exact cause until the underground reservoir is excavated for further examination.
The spill led to road closures for several hours, blocking the area from the intersection of Route 4A and Route 40 to Exit 4 North. The road reopened just before 2 p.m.
