In a major development, the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) and Coal India Limited (CIL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday to establish the Centre of Clean Energy & Net Zero (CLEANZ).
The newly formed centre will be funded with ₹98 crore by CIL and aims to focus on cutting-edge research, technology development, and skill-building for sustainable energy solutions. The MoU signing ceremony took place at IITH and was attended by Director B.S. Murty, CIL Chairman and Managing Director P.M. Prasad, and the Minister of Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy.
According to officials, this MoU is part of the Ministry’s push to boost research capabilities in the energy sector. The collaboration will focus on several key research areas, including enhanced coal bed methane recovery, carbon capture technologies, coal liquefaction, gasification, AI and machine learning in energy, and waste management.
The CLEANZ centre will be located at the IITH campus and will be connected to the National Centre of Coal and Energy Research in Ranchi via high-bandwidth communication to ensure smooth collaboration. The centre will provide training, research facilities, and offer joint opportunities for students, faculty, and professionals from both organizations.
Officials also highlighted that CLEANZ aligns with India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions and promoting sustainable energy. It aims to strengthen the partnership between academia and industry.
“This partnership with CIL is a crucial step in India’s energy transition. Together, we are set to pioneer innovative solutions for clean energy and carbon neutrality,” said Mr. Murty.
