Healthcare giant Bupa has successfully completed its transition to 100% renewable energy in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. This milestone encompasses Bupa’s operations in Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong. The shift is projected to eliminate more than 25,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2-e) annually, a figure equivalent to removing approximately 6,000 cars from the road each year, according to statements from Bupa.
Roger Sharp, Chief Sustainability & Corporate Affairs Officer at Bupa APAC, emphasized the significant role health insurers play in fostering a sustainable future. With the healthcare industry responsible for about 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, Bupa aims to showcase its commitment to environmental responsibility. Sharp stated, “We want our customers and employees to know that when they visit any Bupa clinic, retail store, corporate office, or aged care home across Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong, it is 100% powered by renewable electricity.”
Bupa’s Strategic Transition and Net-Zero Goals
The accomplishment of transitioning to renewable energy aligns with Bupa APAC’s broader goal of becoming a net-zero business by 2040. The insurer achieved this transition through a combination of renewable power purchasing agreements (PPA), government-accredited GreenPower renewable electricity retail contracts, and the acquisition and retirement of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) across the APAC region.
Acknowledging the collaborative efforts that enabled this substantial reduction in carbon emissions, Sharp credited committed partners such as Pacific Blue, CLP Power Hong Kong, and Ecotricity. These partnerships played a crucial role in supporting Bupa’s commitment to sustainable practices.
Investing in Environmental Restoration
In addition to its renewable energy initiatives, Bupa recently made a significant investment of $1 million in environmental restoration projects in Australia and New Zealand. This investment underlines Bupa’s dedication to broader environmental stewardship beyond its immediate operational footprint.
As Bupa continues to demonstrate leadership in sustainability, the company’s commitment to renewable energy and environmental initiatives sends a strong message about the role corporations can play in mitigating their environmental impact and contributing to a more sustainable future.
