In a strategic move towards sustainable energy, Google and geothermal developer Fervo Energy have collaborated on a new 3.5MW geothermal power plant in Nevada, US. This facility plays a crucial role in supplying power to Google’s data centers through a power purchase agreement, contributing to the tech giant’s commitment to renewable energy.
Michael Terrell, Senior Director of Energy and Climate at Google, highlighted the potential of geothermal energy, citing a report from the US Department of Energy. The report suggests that geothermal energy could offer up to 120GW of reliable and flexible generation capacity in the US by 2050, accounting for over 16% of the country’s anticipated electricity needs.
Terrell emphasized the versatility of geothermal energy, especially in regions like the Asia Pacific, where deploying other renewable sources might be challenging. Despite its potential, geothermal energy faces limited use due to economic constraints in areas where accessing underground heat is not straightforward.
Initially unveiled in 2021 as a 5MW project, the collaboration between Google and Fervo employs advanced technology, incorporating Google’s AI systems to enhance operational efficiency.
Fervo Energy implemented an innovative approach by installing fiber optic cables inside its two wells. This infrastructure allows the continuous collection of real-time data on flow, temperature, and the overall performance of the geothermal system. This data-driven strategy ensures optimal efficiency and reliability in the geothermal power generation process.
The successful partnership between Google and Fervo Energy underscores the tech industry’s commitment to adopting cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
