DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Dec. 6, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, a leading force in clean energy in the UAE, has entered into a joint development agreement with the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The collaboration aims to establish a substantial 1-gigawatt (GW) wind project, complete with a battery energy storage system (BESS). Additionally, both parties have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the feasibility of creating a green hydrogen plant.
The agreements were formalized during the COP28 summit in Dubai, witnessed by key figures including Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, COP28 President, and Masdar Chairman. The signing ceremony was also attended by the Minister of the Environment for Jordan, Dr. Muawieh Khalid Radaideh.
The collaborative study will assess the viability of establishing a green hydrogen project near The Port of Aqaba. The project aims to produce highly cost-competitive hydrogen, utilizing desalinated seawater and dedicated renewable power sources.
Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, emphasized Jordan’s potential to become a global leader in the green energy transition, leveraging abundant wind and solar resources. Al Ramahi expressed Masdar’s commitment to supporting Jordan’s decarbonization plans and tapping into the nation’s vast renewable energy potential.
Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, Jordan’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to position Jordan as a regional hub for green energy production. He emphasized the country’s strategic geographical location and abundant renewable energy sources as key assets in providing cost-competitive green hydrogen fuel.
Al-Kharabsheh noted the importance of regional and national cooperation, emphasizing that partnerships, such as the one with Masdar, align with the Ministry’s priorities and the Economic Modernization Vision (2023-2033) recently launched by the Jordanian government. The collaboration with Masdar aligns with Jordan’s initiatives to transition towards clean energy and achieve net-zero emissions.
Masdar, with its Baynouna Solar Energy Company (BSCE) joint venture in Jordan, is already a presence in the country. The joint venture inaugurated the 200MW Baynouna Solar Park earlier this year, the largest clean energy project in Jordan.
As part of the UAE’s broader plans to establish itself as a green hydrogen hub, Masdar aims to achieve 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen production by 2030. This initiative aligns with the UAE’s goal to capture 25% of the global low-carbon hydrogen market by the same year.
Masdar, owned by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Mubadala Investment Company (Mubadala), and Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), is a driving force in advancing renewable energy and green hydrogen technologies globally. Established in 2006, Masdar has a diversified portfolio of investments in over 40 countries, with a combined value exceeding US$30 billion. The company is targeting a renewable energy portfolio capacity of at least 100 GW by 2030, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and clean energy.
