IGD, a leading provider of gas detection solutions, recently showcased a successful case study detailing the implementation of hydrogen gas detection systems for Creo International, a prominent UK-based hydrogen energy system manufacturer and installer. The collaboration between IGD and Creo resulted in the deployment of a cost-effective and tailored system, ensuring safety and efficiency in Creo’s operations.
Addressing the Need for Gas Detection at Creo
Hydrogen, known for its explosive nature between 4% and 75% in the atmosphere, poses a significant hazard with even the smallest leaks. Recognizing this risk, Creo, with its emphasis on integrating large quantities of hydrogen into their energy systems, prioritized the implementation of a robust gas detection system. The primary objective was to safeguard both the Creo team and their customers from potential dangers.
Creo outlined specific requirements for the gas detection system, emphasizing compatibility with RS485 capabilities, high sensitivity, and the ability to seamlessly integrate into their existing Energy Management System (EMS). Furthermore, the sensors needed to withstand harsh weather conditions as they would be deployed outdoors in IP55-rated cabinets. In addition to these technical specifications, Creo sought a manufacturer with comprehensive expertise in the hydrogen economy and gas detection industry, capable of providing training on the implemented devices.
IGD’s Tailored Hydrogen Gas Detection Solution
IGD delivered a customized solution for Creo, offering the TOC-635 Plus equipped with pre-calibrated TOC-750 Safe Area hydrogen sensors and Beacon Sounders. Leveraging over a century of knowledge in gas detection, IGD’s solution addressed Creo’s specific needs effectively.
The TOC-635 Plus emerged as the optimal choice for small applications, featuring an illuminated jog wheel and a built-in slam switch, consolidating essential functions in one user-friendly interface. Its plug-and-play capabilities and auto-system setup significantly reduced setup time, allowing for seamless implementation with minimal training requirements.
The TOC-635 Plus, equipped with IoT capabilities, enables remote alarm notifications and easy integration into existing Building Management Systems (BMS). This advanced feature enhances the overall efficiency and monitoring capabilities of Creo’s gas detection system.
For detecting hydrogen at extremely low levels, IGD provided Creo with the TOC-750 Safe Area Hydrogen sensors. Given hydrogen’s flammability at low concentrations, accurate and swift detection is crucial. IGD’s sensors, with a detection range of 0-1000ppm and the capability to identify levels as low as 0.1ppm, proved to be ideal for Creo’s application, ensuring the earliest possible detection of any potential leaks and mitigating the risk of explosions.
The successful implementation of IGD’s hydrogen gas detection system exemplifies the importance of tailored solutions in addressing specific safety challenges within the hydrogen energy sector.
