Singapore’s Housing & Development Board (HDB) has made significant strides in sustainable energy solutions by awarding its most extensive solar leasing tender to Sunseap Leasing, a subsidiary of EDP Renewables APAC, as part of the SolarNova program. This groundbreaking initiative involves the installation of solar panels on approximately 1,075 HDB blocks and 101 government sites, boasting a solar capacity of 130 megawatt-peak (MWp), surpassing initial projections.
Marking a milestone in the SolarNova program, the SolarNova 8 tender introduces innovative technology developed in collaboration with EtaVolt, aimed at extending the lifespan of solar panels by 4 to 5 years. For the first time in the program’s history, an advanced regeneration technology for solar panels is incorporated. This patented technology, developed by EtaVolt, utilizes intense light to re-energize solar cells at the molecular level, potentially recovering up to 5% of the solar panel’s efficiency. The process requires annual regeneration activity, showcasing a commitment to sustainability and longevity.
HDB has been a leader in the deployment of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in Singapore since 2008. With the inclusion of the SolarNova 8 tender, HDB has now committed to a total solar capacity of 455 MWp, achieving nearly 85% of its 540 MWp target by 2030. The harnessed solar energy plays a vital role in powering common services in HDB estates, contributing to net-zero energy consumption for areas equipped with solar panels.
Elevator Energy Regeneration System (EERS) Retrofitting for Enhanced Sustainability
In tandem with the SolarNova 8 initiative, HDB has awarded tenders to Chevalier Singapore Pte Ltd and EM Services Pte Ltd for retrofitting 4,000 lifts island-wide with the Elevator Energy Regeneration System (EERS). This retrofitting project is scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2024 and is expected to conclude by 2030. The EERS is designed to recover energy generated during lift motions and braking operations, leading to an average reduction of 20% in lift energy consumption.
Sustainable Living and Future Green Initiatives
Mr. Tan Sze Tiong, Chief Sustainability Officer at HDB, emphasized that these initiatives are integral to the Green Towns Programme, contributing to sustainable living in existing HDB towns. With SolarNova 8 and EERS, HDB aims to actively reduce energy consumption, create a more sustainable living environment, and explore additional green initiatives for the benefit of residents.
