Green North Energy has unveiled plans to implement its production concept, developed with support from Business Finland, in new locations following the ongoing development of a pilot plant in Naantali. The pilot plant, slated for completion in 2027, serves as a precursor to broader deployment.
In early 2023, Business Finland allocated €2.3 million in R&D funding to Green North Energy for the development of a scalable green hydrogen and ammonia production concept. This initiative marks a significant step toward advancing sustainable energy solutions.
Green North Energy has initiated feasibility studies for deploying its concept in Pori and Kemi as part of the BalticSeaH2 project. These proposed facilities, mirroring the size of the Naantali plant, are envisaged as investments exceeding €600 million each. The strategic focus on these locations aligns with the company’s commitment to accelerating the green transition, bolstering supply security, and fostering job creation.
Notably, Green North Energy emphasizes that the projected production volumes would position Finland as self-sufficient in ammonia production, underscoring the nation’s strides toward energy independence and sustainability.
The selection of Pori and Kemi for these new plants stems from various factors, notably the presence of significant offshore wind projects in both regions, poised to provide renewable energy essential for hydrogen ventures. Additionally, the proximity of their ports plays a pivotal role, facilitating efficient transportation to distant European markets, as highlighted by Green North Energy.
Jussi Ylinen, Managing Director of Green North Energy, stressed the critical link between offshore wind power and the economic viability of the proposed plants. Ylinen emphasized the need to address barriers hindering offshore wind development to ensure synchronous progress in hydrogen and energy projects.
The expansion of Green North Energy’s green hydrogen and ammonia production initiative underscores the growing momentum toward sustainable energy solutions, positioning Finland as a key player in the global transition toward renewable resources.
