2023 marked a significant milestone for the global electric vehicle technology giant, BYD, as it expanded its presence across multiple industries, including new energy vehicles, rail transit, renewable energy, and electronics. Notably, BYD ventured into Australasia, establishing a factory-backed Commercial Vehicles Division in Australia and New Zealand to target the local market.
However, BYD’s crowning achievement came at the year’s end when it emerged as the global leader in new energy vehicle sales, surpassing a record-breaking three million annual sales. Jon Tozer, Director of BYD Australia Commercial Vehicles, highlighted the company’s remarkable growth trajectory, emphasizing its expansion to over 400 cities in 70 countries across six continents.
This achievement marks the second consecutive year that BYD has topped the global new energy vehicle sales charts, a feat further underscored by its inclusion among the top 10 companies for car sales worldwide in 2023. In its home market of China, BYD maintained its dominance as the best-selling car brand and manufacturer.
The new energy vehicle milestone was reached in December, with 341,043 units sold, reflecting a 45% increase and pushing the total vehicle sales for the year over 3 million. BYD’s commitment to producing new energy vehicles paid off on the global stage, with a notable 61.9% increase from 2022.
Central to BYD’s success is its globalization strategy, evident in the exponential growth of exports, which surged by 334.2% to 242,765 units in 2023. Originally founded in 1995 as a rechargeable battery manufacturer, BYD has rapidly evolved into a global leader in new energy vehicles, leveraging technological innovations for sustainable development.
Looking ahead, BYD’s vision of reducing the Earth’s temperature by one degree Celsius remains steadfast, with the company poised to continue its new energy vehicle production. In a groundbreaking move, BYD has been named the official e-mobility partner of UEFA Euro 2024, marking the first sponsorship deal with a new energy vehicle manufacturer in the championship’s history.
Michael Shu, Managing Director of BYD Europe, emphasized the partnership’s significance in promoting environmental responsibility, aligning with BYD’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions. The partnership with UEFA Euro 2024 provides BYD with a platform to showcase its latest electric vehicle advancements to a global audience.
Locally, BYD’s presence will be felt at the Bus Industry Confederation’s National Bus & Coach Show in Brisbane, marking its first industry expo event since establishing the Australian Commercial Vehicles Division. Jon Tozer expressed excitement about BYD’s prospects in 2024, emphasizing the brand’s commitment to providing world-leading new energy vehicles and advanced technologies to accelerate the transition to e-mobility.
