A manufacturer based in Rhymney is eyeing a sustainable future by venturing into wind and solar energy to power its operations.
Convatec, located on the Heads of the Valleys Industrial Estate, has unveiled plans for a ‘Green Manufacturing Hub’ aimed at harnessing wind and solar energy to fuel its two Welsh plants.
The proposed hub is slated to feature three wind turbines and approximately ten hectares of solar panels, boasting a combined generating capacity of around 20MW.
If realized, the hub could substantially diminish Convatec’s dependence on gas and grid electricity at its Rhymney and Deeside facilities.
The company, renowned for its global medical products and technologies and employing over 100 individuals in Rhymney, envisions potential surplus energy benefiting neighboring businesses. Moreover, Convatec proposes the establishment of a Community Benefits Fund, anticipated to reach approximately £75,000 annually.
Matthew Cornish, Rhymney Interim Plant Director, emphasized the transition to locally produced clean energy as a move to enhance operational resilience. He underscored the significance of sustaining the production of medical products crucial for individuals with chronic illnesses, while reaffirming the company’s commitment to supporting the local community.
“We are committed to supporting our local community and look forward to further engaging with neighbors, stakeholders, and local businesses to continue the process of identifying opportunities for working together to achieve positive community-focused outcomes,” stated Cornish.
Given its projected capacity exceeding 10MW, the project qualifies as a Development of National Significance, necessitating approval from the Welsh Government.
Convatec will submit its proposals to the Welsh Government and embark on a six-week statutory consultation period commencing from April 17 to May 29.
Additionally, two community events are scheduled, offering residents an avenue to discuss the proposals and provide feedback. These events are set to take place on Wednesday, May 15, from 3 pm to 6 pm at Upper Rhymney Primary School and Thursday, May 16, from 10 am to 2 pm at Rhymney Day Centre, Tre-York St.
