Blyth, Northumberland, is set to become home to the world’s most advanced wind turbine test facility, announced by Science, Research, and Innovation Minister Andrew Griffith on Tuesday, May 14th. This monumental £86 million investment in wind power research and development is poised to significantly reduce CO2 emissions while bolstering economic growth.
Located at the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult’s National Renewable Energy Centre, the newly envisioned facility will serve as a hub for testing, validating, and certifying turbines. Its primary objective is to expedite the deployment of the largest and most efficient wind turbines to market, thereby curbing CO2 emissions by an estimated 2.5 million tonnes over an eight-and-a-half-month period – an amount twice the annual CO2 emissions of Newcastle’s population. This advancement promises a substantial increase in eco-friendly energy sources, contributing to the sustainability of powering homes and businesses.
The allocated funding will be directed towards the construction of a 150-meter blade test facility, meticulously designed to simulate the rigorous conditions experienced at sea. Future expansion plans include the potential to extend the facility to 180 meters. Additionally, the existing 100-meter blade test facility will be repurposed to enhance capacity, enabling the testing of the largest blades currently available in the market and those in near-future development stages.
Moreover, the newly established research and development infrastructure will play a pivotal role in supporting the growth of UK supply chains, aligning with the industry’s objective of sourcing 60% of offshore wind farm components domestically. This initiative aims to attract investments in the burgeoning offshore wind sector, fostering economic prosperity while fortifying the UK’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
Notably, the facility will undergo upgrades to its drive train test facility, elevating its capacity from the current 15 megawatts (MW) to 23MW, with a prospective expansion pathway to 28MW as industry demands evolve. This enhancement will not only increase power generation but also propel wind turbine technology to unprecedented levels of efficiency.
Expected to create at least 30 new jobs in Blyth and support five PhD positions annually, the facility presents an opportunity for the creation of highly skilled and well-compensated employment opportunities, contributing to the UK’s regional development agenda.

Construction of the facility is expected to commence this summer, with the major upgrade to the drive train test facility set for completion by 2028. This ambitious undertaking signifies a monumental leap forward in advancing wind turbine technology, solidifying the UK’s position at the forefront of renewable energy innovation.
