The supply of petroleum products in Kathmandu Valley has been severely impacted by a protest led by the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Association. This protest has led to long queues at government petrol pumps, while private pumps have remained closed since Monday morning.
At the Nepali Army petrol pump in Bhadrakali, people have been observed standing in lengthy lines, attempting to refuel their vehicles. Many private pumps have put up ‘no petrol’ signs, causing significant inconvenience to the public.
The tanker drivers initiated their protest on Sunday, presenting a seven-point demand. Their demands include the issuance of appointment letters for all drivers and co-drivers as per the Labor Act, adherence to government-mandated salary arrangements, cancellation of double bank guarantees and annual renewals for self-employed drivers, proper temperature management, inclusion in the social security fund, and provision of risk allowances.
As a result of the protest by the drivers, the supply of petroleum products to private pumps has been halted, although government-run pumps are still receiving supplies. The Nepal Oil Corporation has called for negotiations with the drivers in an effort to resolve the issue.
