Is Solar Energy Outpacing Oil Energy in 2024?

by Krystal

The global energy landscape is undergoing a significant shift as solar power emerges as a formidable contender against traditional fossil fuels. Recent data from Bloomberg and Ernst and Young (EY) highlight key trends reshaping the energy sector.

According to Bloomberg, the seven largest solar companies, all based in China, are now surpassing the top seven fossil fuel producers in energy supply. This shift is underpinned by solar energy‘s status as the cheapest source of new-build electricity, as highlighted by EY. Despite inflationary pressures, solar power’s levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) has plummeted, making it 29% cheaper than the cheapest fossil fuel alternative on a global scale.

EY’s predictions further underscore the momentum behind solar and wind energy, signaling a potential shift towards these renewables as the global baseload electricity source. Experts anticipate that by 2030, solar and wind will constitute 38% of the global energy mix, rising to 62% by 2050. Notably, China, Europe, and the United States are expected to drive a 53% increase in solar and wind generation, accounting for over 57% of global output by 2050.

The growing investment in clean energy is another significant factor propelling the solar sector forward. The International Energy Association (IEA) forecasts that solar investments will surpass those in oil production for the first time in 2023. This trend reflects a broader shift in capital allocation towards clean technologies, with every dollar invested in fossil fuels now being matched by approximately 1.7 dollars in clean energy.

The remarkable cost reductions in solar energy, with LCOE dropping by 88% since the early 2010s, have further bolstered its competitiveness. Wind power has also seen a significant decline in costs, falling by around 60% over the same period, according to EY’s report.

As these developments unfold, the future of energy production and consumption will undoubtedly be shaped by the continued growth and adoption of renewable sources like solar and wind. While fossil fuels currently dominate the energy landscape, the accelerating pace of clean energy adoption suggests a transformative shift in the years to come.
