Diederik Samsom, previously a key aide to Frans Timmermans, will join Gasunie’s supervisory board starting July 1, where he is set to assume the role of chair. Known for his role in shaping the European Green Deal, Samsom brings extensive experience in climate policy, having served prominently in the European Commission since 2019.
During his tenure as chief of staff to Frans Timmermans, Samsom played a pivotal role in designing legislative frameworks aimed at guiding the EU towards achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Addressing questions about the optics of moving from a high-profile environmental policy role to advising a company primarily involved in fossil fuels, Samsom emphasized Gasunie’s role in advancing renewable energy infrastructure, despite not trading or owning natural gas directly.
Gasunie, responsible for managing the Netherlands’ gas transport network, has recently shifted focus towards hydrogen investments. This strategic move includes plans to integrate the country’s future hydrogen network with Belgium and Germany. Moreover, the company launched a floating liquefied natural gas terminal in 2022 to mitigate supply disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions.
In a statement on Gasunie’s website, Samsom highlighted the potential for adapting the current infrastructure to accommodate hydrogen, green gas, heat, and carbon dioxide, emphasizing a forward-looking approach to energy transition.
Tim van der Hagen, vice-chair of the board, expressed confidence in Samsom’s appointment, citing his background as a former Greenpeace activist and leader of the Dutch Labour Party, noting his ability to contribute significantly to Gasunie’s strategic goals amidst evolving energy dynamics.
