“It’s significantly more expensive here. We avoid buying fuel locally,” remarked one resident. Another described the prices as “ridiculous” and “just plain theft.”
Brendan Walsh, a Thames resident, has been actively campaigning on social media for fairer fuel prices. He argues that the high costs disproportionately affect the town, which has many pensioners and beneficiaries struggling with fixed incomes. Walsh finds it unjustified that Thames pays more than even remote areas elsewhere in the country.
Thames hosts four petrol stations, where prices for 91 octane were observed at $2.96 (BP and Mobil) and $2.91 (Gull), without factoring in discount cards. These rates contrast sharply with the national average of $2.67 for the same grade of fuel.
Local businesses are concerned about the economic impact of residents traveling outside Thames for cheaper fuel. Adrian Catran, chairperson of the community board, worries that this trend will divert local spending to neighboring towns, affecting Thames’ economy negatively.

Community backlash has been substantial, with local media and social platforms buzzing with discontent. Coromandel FM launched a campaign highlighting the disparity, prompting widespread community engagement and an online petition addressed to the Commerce Commission. The petition has garnered 634 signatures, with plans for a protest against high fuel prices scheduled for next month.
In response to inquiries, BP acknowledged the pricing complexity but emphasized daily price reviews to maintain market competitiveness. Gull, operated independently in Thames, attributed pricing to local operational decisions. The other stations did not provide comments.
The community remains determined to challenge the high fuel prices, seeking accountability and fair pricing practices from local petrol providers.
