Maui drivers are paying an average of seven cents more per gallon for unleaded gas than the statewide average, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. As of this morning, the average price in Kahului was $4.69, while the statewide average stood at $4.62.
In Central Maui, the gas price benchmark is one cent lower than last week, two cents higher than last month, and 13 cents lower than a year ago, the report indicates.
“As fall road trip season approaches, travelers are benefiting from significantly lower gas prices compared to last year,” said Liane Sumida, general manager of AAA Hawaii. “Since late July, fuel costs have steadily declined. This is due to a relatively calm Atlantic hurricane season and the transition of many gas stations to winter-blend gasoline, which is cheaper to produce. This combination offers relief for those planning to travel this autumn.”
Gas prices on the island have decreased from last week and are down 4% compared to last year, according to Gas Watch. The average price for regular unleaded gas in Hawaii is $4.62, two cents lower than last week. The national average is $3.22, also down two cents from last Thursday.
In Honolulu, the average price for regular unleaded is $4.48, which is two cents lower than last week, three cents lower than last month, and 22 cents lower than the same date last year. In Hilo, the average price is $4.81, three cents lower than last week, one cent lower than last month, and 13 cents lower than a year ago. Līhuʻe’s average price for regular unleaded gas is $5.26, one cent lower than last week, the same as last month, and five cents lower than this time last year.
