8 MW Energy Storage Facility Inaugurated in Hungary, Boosting National Capacity by 20%

by Krystal

A new 8-megawatt (MW) battery energy storage facility, capable of storing 16 megawatt-hours (MWh), was officially opened on Friday at the Győr Industrial Park in northwestern Hungary. The facility, built by ALTEO Energy Services Plc, will provide nearly one-fifth of Hungary’s total energy storage capacity.

The new installation is expected to significantly enhance the integration of renewable energy sources, which are often weather-dependent. Gergely Suppan, Deputy State Secretary for Macroeconomic Analysis at the Ministry for National Economy, highlighted the importance of this development at the inauguration ceremony. He noted that this facility will boost the country’s total energy storage capacity by 20%, with ALTEO operating around 40% of Hungary’s current energy storage infrastructure.

“There is an ongoing debate in Hungary and across Europe about the impact of energy demand on industrial production and its effect on European competitiveness,” Suppan said. He referred to several European reports, such as the Draghi report, which emphasize the importance of affordable, reliable, locally produced, and green energy in maintaining Europe’s economic dynamism.

Suppan also addressed the broader global context, stating that the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine war have brought fundamental changes to the global economy. This, he said, calls for new economic policies and solutions. “It has become evident that Hungary must create an affordable and secure energy supply that supports green energy use,” he stressed.

Attila Chikán Jr., President and CEO of ALTEO, said that the new energy storage facility will increase both the capacity and flexibility of the company’s Regulatory Center, enabling it to make a more substantial contribution to stabilizing the national grid. The facility will help balance energy demand fluctuations and more effectively integrate renewable energy into the system.

The Győr facility is ALTEO’s third energy storage installation in Hungary, following previous projects in Budapest’s Zugló district and in Kazincbarcika, northern Hungary.
