As the U.S. energy sector prepares for a new administration in Washington, the American Petroleum Institute (API) has unveiled a “5 Point Policy Roadmap” aimed at strengthening America’s energy independence. In light of Donald Trump’s recent election, API is calling on the president-elect and the Republican-controlled Congress to ease regulations and speed up the approval process for oil, gas, and LNG projects.
In a letter addressed to Trump, API CEO Mike Sommers stressed the importance of rolling back what the group calls “extreme regulations” that have hampered U.S. energy development.
The letter outlines several key requests, including the introduction of a new five-year offshore leasing program. API is also asking for reduced restrictions on federal lands for onshore drilling and a faster process for LNG export permits. These changes, API argues, would not only strengthen U.S. energy security but could also help lower inflation by increasing the domestic energy supply. The proposals align with Trump’s campaign promise to boost U.S. energy production, particularly through offshore drilling and LNG exports.
“We are ready to collaborate with you and Congress to reverse current policies and push forward an ambitious plan to secure America’s energy leadership,” Sommers wrote in the letter.
In 2023, U.S. LNG exports hit a record 11.9 billion cubic feet per day, becoming a crucial supplier in global markets, especially in Europe, where U.S. gas has helped replace Russian pipeline exports. However, U.S. LNG projects continue to face challenges, including environmental lawsuits, contractor delays, and policy changes under the Biden administration, which has temporarily paused some permits.
