CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Gas prices in South Carolina have dropped over the past week, following a slight rise the week before.
As of Monday morning, the average price for a gallon of gas in the state is $2.70, down 9.5 cents from the previous week, according to a survey by GasBuddy, which tracks over 3,000 gas stations statewide.
Prices are significantly lower compared to a month ago, with a decrease of 18.1 cents per gallon, and 20.6 cents lower than this time last year.
On Sunday, the cheapest gas in South Carolina was priced at $2.45 per gallon, while the most expensive was $3.39.
In the Lowcountry, the lowest price for a gallon of gas was $2.52, available at Parker’s Kitchen on North Rhett Avenue in North Charleston.
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, explained that several states saw price fluctuations last week. Gas prices in some areas surged after falling below stations’ replacement costs, causing a temporary rise. This resulted in a slow national decline, although some states experienced larger price jumps.
“Good news is that states with significant price increases last week will likely see the largest drops this week,” De Haan said. “This could bring the national average below $3 per gallon in time for Thanksgiving, with 28 states already seeing prices below that mark.”
Nationally, gas prices have barely changed, down just 0.7 cents, averaging $3.02 per gallon as of Monday morning. However, prices are still lower than a month ago by 15.2 cents and 27.6 cents compared to last year.
Meanwhile, diesel prices continue to trend downward, with a slight decrease of 0.4 cents, bringing the national average to about $3.52 per gallon.
