Gas prices could drop below $3 per gallon for the first time since May 2021, according to AAA.
On Wednesday, the national average for a gallon of gas was $3.06. However, in 29 states, gas prices are already below $3 per gallon.
GasBuddy predicts that the national average will fall to $2.98 per gallon during the Thanksgiving week, just in time for holiday travel. Nearly 71.7 million people are expected to hit the roads during this time.
“Americans are excited to travel and visit family this Thanksgiving, with most choosing to drive because gas prices are lower than they were last year,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. Last year, the national average on Thanksgiving Day was $3.26 per gallon.
AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz noted that gas prices are much lower than last year and that the national average could be under $3 this Thanksgiving, which hasn’t happened since 2021.
Inrix, a transportation data provider, advised that Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons will be the busiest times to travel. The best time to drive will be on Thanksgiving Day itself.
