Gas prices in Massachusetts have dropped by 42 cents compared to last year, according to AAA. The average price for a gallon of gas this week is $3.01.
This drop comes as good news for residents planning to travel for Thanksgiving, the busiest holiday for travel in the U.S. AAA predicts that 71.7 million Americans will drive to their Thanksgiving destinations. This is an increase of 1.3 million travelers compared to last year and 1.1 million more than in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
The average gas price in Massachusetts is six cents lower than the national average, based on AAA data from November 18.
Mark Schieldrop, a spokesman for AAA Northeast, said that gas prices this holiday season could be the lowest since 2021. However, prices are still higher than in the five years before the pandemic.
Schieldrop noted that gas prices usually don’t heavily affect people’s travel plans during Thanksgiving. “They may grumble about the cost, but they still fill up their tanks and go on their trips,” he said.
As for the broader picture, Schieldrop explained that markets are focused on global oil and gas demand. A key factor in stabilizing prices has been strong domestic oil and gas production throughout 2024.
For those driving electric vehicles, AAA also provides a map of charging station locations to help with travel planning.
