TEHRAN – Natural gas delivery to Iran’s power plants reached 182 million cubic meters per day (mcm/d) during the week ending November 23, marking a 3.3 mcm/d increase compared to the same period last year.
According to Shana, the rise in gas supply coincides with lower average air temperatures and the arrival of several precipitation systems in November, which brought snowfall to parts of the country.
In addition to the colder weather, the expansion of natural gas services to households and industries has led to a steady increase in overall gas consumption across Iran.
Despite the higher demand from the household sector, the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) has prioritized gas delivery to power plants. During the last week of the Iranian month of Aban (ending November 21), the household, business, and small industrial sectors consumed a total of 455 mcm/d of natural gas.
Earlier this year, the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company (NIOPDC) reported that it supplied 30% more fuel to power plants during the first 131 days of the Iranian calendar year (March 20 to July 28) compared to the same period last year.
Morteza Abedini, the director of supply and distribution at NIOPDC, said that during this period, a total of 5.953 billion liters of liquid fuel were delivered to power plants, including 3.223 billion liters of oil and gas and 2.7 billion liters of fuel oil.
Abedini also mentioned that the Ministry of Oil has been working closely with the NIGC and the Ministry of Energy to ensure that natural gas remains the primary fuel for power plants, which will help increase the storage of liquid fuel.
In May, Saeed Aghili, head of the NIGC’s Dispatching Department, reported that gas supply to power plants had increased by 11% during the previous Iranian calendar year (which ended March 19) compared to the year before. A total of 79 billion cubic meters of natural gas was supplied to power plants in that period.
Aghili also noted that total gas consumption in Iran for the previous year reached 249 billion cubic meters, an increase of 7 billion cubic meters over the previous year.
Furthermore, the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC) revealed that it has supplied over $3.8 billion worth of liquid fuel to power plants over the past 2.5 years. During this period, 3.6 million liters of gas oil and 2.5 million liters of fuel oil were provided to 110 power plants across the country.
