BUDAPEST — Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto emphasized on Monday that any threat to the safety or operation of the TurkStream pipeline must be seen as “an attack on the sovereignty of gas-receiving nations.”
This statement comes after reports of a Ukrainian drone strike targeting the Russkaya compressor station in Russia, a key facility for the pipeline that transports natural gas.
Szijjarto reiterated the crucial role TurkStream plays in Hungary and Central Europe’s energy security, calling it “indispensable.” In a Facebook post, he praised TurkStream for being a reliable energy corridor, noting that all parties, including suppliers and transit countries, have consistently fulfilled their contractual obligations.
“We expect all parties to respect the safety and functionality of this vital transport route,” Szijjarto said.
His remarks followed a report from the Russian Ministry of Defense, which confirmed that Ukrainian drones attacked TurkStream infrastructure on Saturday. The ministry stated that all nine drones were intercepted, causing only minor damage to a building and equipment. Fortunately, the incident did not disrupt the gas supply through the pipeline.
Since the beginning of the year, TurkStream has become increasingly important for Hungary and Central Europe, particularly as it replaced the Ukrainian route for Russian gas supplies. This shift has made TurkStream a cornerstone of the region’s energy security strategy.
