At least two people have died, and four remain missing following an explosion at a gas refinery near Florence, Italy, on Monday, local authorities reported. Nine others were injured in the blast at the Eni-owned facility, one of Italy’s largest energy companies.
A fire ignited by the explosion has been brought under control, according to the municipality of Calenzano. Eni confirmed the fire occurred at its fuel depot in Calenzano, stating it was confined to the loading area and did not affect the tank farm.
The company expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families, adding that it is working with authorities to investigate the cause of the explosion.
The regional Department of Civil Protection issued a warning for people within 5 kilometers (3 miles) of the site to stay indoors, keep windows closed, and avoid the area.
Regional president Eugenio Giani expressed collective sorrow for the tragedy on Telegram, stating, “All of Tuscany is united in grief.”
In response, the local government has declared two days of mourning on Monday and Tuesday.
