HARNETT COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) — A 20-year-old woman is in critical but stable condition after being set on fire in Harnett County. Authorities say she suffered second- and third-degree burns after being doused with gasoline and ignited with a cigarette.
The incident occurred on December 16. The Harnett County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford, where medical staff reported a burn victim. Upon arrival, investigators learned the woman had been admitted with burns covering the right side of her body. She was later transferred to a burn center for specialized care.
According to authorities, the woman was walking near the intersection of NC 27 West and Barbecue Church Road when three individuals approached her. They poured gasoline on her and set her on fire using a cigarette.
The victim’s family has launched an online fundraiser to help cover the costs of her medical treatment, including future surgeries, ongoing care, and rehabilitation.
The Sheriff’s Office has yet to identify any witnesses and is seeking help from the public. They have not received any information regarding the attack.
