SOUTH CAROLINA (WCIV) — Gasoline prices in South Carolina have seen a slight increase over the past week. The average price rose by two cents, reaching $2.76 per gallon on Monday, according to a survey by GasBuddy. This is a four-cent increase compared to a month ago. However, prices are still 2.5 cents lower than this time last year.
Nationally, diesel prices have also gone up by 3.7 cents in the past week, now averaging $3.52 per gallon. On the other hand, the national average price for gasoline has decreased by 1.1 cents, bringing it to $3.02 per gallon. While this represents a small increase of 0.9 cents from last month, it is 3.2 cents lower than the same time last year, based on data from over 150,000 gas stations nationwide.
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, explained that while the national average price of gasoline has remained steady, colder weather has caused diesel prices to rise. He warned that this could also affect gasoline prices if refiners face disruptions. De Haan also pointed out that although gas prices haven’t fluctuated much yet, oil prices have reached their highest levels since October. This is partly due to new sanctions imposed by President Biden on “dark vessels,” which have limited countries like Iran from selling oil. De Haan suggested that these factors could lead to more noticeable price increases soon.
De Haan further explained that while demand for gasoline tends to be lower during this season, refinery maintenance is just around the corner. During this period, refiners usually cut back on gasoline production, which could lead to higher prices in the spring.
In South Carolina, the cheapest gasoline on Sunday was priced at $2.39 per gallon, while the most expensive was $3.25 per gallon, showing an 86-cent price difference between stations.
