Expanded Natural Gas Supply Capacity for Isalnita and Turceni Power Plants

by Krystal

The National Gas Transmission Company, Transgaz, has secured funding for the construction of two gas supply pipelines that will serve the Turceni and Isalnita thermal power plants, part of Complexul Energetic Oltenia. The approved investment of over RON 73 million aims to boost the transmission capacity and enhance the security of natural gas supply to the Isalnita Electrocentrale Branch. The project involves the construction of the TN Hurezani – Bibesti – TN Turburea pipeline.

The project also includes safety measures for the pipeline undercrossing in the Gilort River area, part of the Turceni Electrocentrale Turceni – Tantareni pipeline. These measures will ensure a stable and secure natural gas supply to the Turceni Electrocentrale Branch.

A public tender for the construction work will be held on February 14, 2025.

At Isalnita, plans are in place to build an 850 MW natural gas-fired generation unit, developed in collaboration with ALRO. Similarly, Turceni will see the construction of a 475 MW unit in partnership with Tinmar Energy. These initiatives are aligned with Complexul Energetic Oltenia’s strategy to restructure and decarbonize its operations.

In September of last year, Minister of Energy Sebastian Burduja and Transgaz Director-General Ion Sterian signed a financing contract aimed at increasing the transmission capacity and enhancing the security of natural gas supply to both the Isalnita and Turceni Electrocentrale branches.

“This financing agreement underscores Transgaz’s commitment to advancing, modernizing, and expanding the natural gas transmission infrastructure. It will ensure a reliable natural gas supply for the two power plants, Isalnita (850 MW) and Turceni (475 MW), and is a critical part of Romania’s decarbonization efforts,” said Ion Sterian.

Sterian further emphasized that natural gas transmission infrastructure is essential for the country’s energy security, diversification of energy sources, and the fight against climate change. He urged the European Commission to consider funding for the infrastructure, which will also support the transition to green hydrogen.

The construction of the gas pipelines is set to increase energy security in South-East Romania and enable the connection of local communities to the National Natural Gas Transmission System. The pipelines will serve over 42,000 people across 12 localities, improving the quality of life for residents. They will also benefit 15,500 households, 82 educational facilities, 24 places of worship, 22 medical centers, and 11 cultural institutions.

The project includes the construction of three pipelines: the CCGT Isalnita connection pipeline (0.610 km), the TN Hurezani – TN Turburea pipeline (24.165 km), and the Tantareni – Turceni pipeline (11.055 km). These pipelines will total over 35.5 km in length, with a diameter of DN 500 and a pressure rating of 40 bar.

With this investment, Transgaz is supporting the economic growth and sustainable development of the region while contributing to Romania’s decarbonization goals.
