Natural gas prices continued to rise on January 14 at the Bucharest Commodity Exchange (BRM) as colder weather and uncertainties over the future of the TurkStream pipeline drove up demand. The pipeline, which remains the only source transporting Russian gas to Europe, has raised concerns about its long-term functionality.
On January 14, the price of natural gas surpassed RON 300 (EUR 60) per MWh for the first time in nearly two years, according to Profit.ro.
Romania, which had been a net gas exporter for a long time, returned to being a net importer on the same day.
The intraday market saw a significant jump in activity, with 12.6 GWh of gas traded—a 65% increase from the previous day. Prices reached an average of RON 305 per MWh, marking the highest level in two years.
While the day-ahead market price for natural gas on the BRM was EUR 58.7 per MWh, the price on the Austrian CEGH market, the region’s most significant exchange, was EUR 8.4 lower, at EUR 50.3 per MWh.
