The Fuling shale gas field in southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality has started operating 15 new wells this year, increasing its daily gas output by 600,000 cubic meters, according to Sinopec, China’s largest oil refiner, on Wednesday.
With these new wells, the Fuling gas field now produces over 25 million cubic meters of shale gas per day, enough to supply energy to nearly 50 million households.
The field holds proven shale gas reserves of over 1 trillion cubic meters. In 2024, its annual output reached more than 8.5 billion cubic meters.
Since becoming China’s first large-scale shale gas field to begin commercial development in 2014, Fuling has provided clean energy to more than 70 cities along the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
