On his first day in office, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at boosting America’s energy production. The order focuses on easing restrictions for oil and gas extraction, while also reversing several climate-related policies introduced by President Biden.
As promised during his campaign, Trump’s executive order follows a national energy emergency declaration. This declaration includes measures to speed up the development of energy infrastructure. It also gives government agencies emergency authority to assist in the exploration, leasing, and production of domestic energy resources, particularly on federal lands.
The new policy encourages increased energy exploration and production on federal lands and waters, including the Outer Continental Shelf. The goal is to meet U.S. energy needs and position the country as a global energy leader for years to come.
Additionally, the order aims to strengthen the U.S. as a leading producer of non-fuel minerals, such as rare earth elements. This would help create jobs, boost prosperity, enhance supply chains for the U.S. and its allies, and reduce the influence of adversarial states.
The executive order also seeks to remove the electric vehicle (EV) mandate, promoting greater consumer choice. By eliminating regulatory barriers, the policy would encourage economic growth and innovation in the automotive sector. It also calls for ending state emissions waivers that restrict the sale of gasoline-powered cars and considers removing subsidies that favor EVs, which some argue make other types of vehicles less affordable.
Furthermore, Trump’s order promotes consumer choice in household goods and appliances, such as light bulbs, dishwashers, washing machines, gas stoves, and water heaters. It aims to encourage market competition and innovation in the manufacturing industry.
