China’s Retaliatory Tariffs Target US Coal and Gas

by Krystal

China has responded to the US’s new tariffs by imposing its own retaliatory measures. Following President Donald Trump’s decision to apply a 10% tax on all Chinese imports, China has introduced a 15% tariff on coal and liquefied natural gas from the US. Additionally, crude oil, agricultural machinery, pickup trucks, and large-engine vehicles will face a 10% tax. These tariffs are set to take effect next Monday.

China has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO), accusing the US of violating international trade rules.

Trump stated that the tariffs were a response to trade imbalances and part of an effort to stop the flow of fentanyl, an opioid. The Trump administration claims that chemicals used to produce fentanyl come from China.

However, Beijing has insisted that the fentanyl crisis is a domestic issue for the US.

The new US tariff on Chinese imports, an additional 10%, went into effect on Tuesday.

In its official response, China criticized the move, stating it “does not help solve America’s problems” and “undermines normal economic and trade relations between China and the US.”
