Ukraine’s Gas Imports Stay High Despite Infrastructure Attacks, Reuters Reports

by Krystal

Ukraine is continuing to import high levels of gas from the European Union despite a series of Russian missile attacks on its gas infrastructure, Reuters reported on February 9.

According to data from Ukraine’s state-run gas transmission system operator, the country imported 16.3 million cubic meters of gas on Sunday. The gas likely came from Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland.

Throughout the war, Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukrainian infrastructure, including gas storage facilities in the western part of the country, using missiles and drones.

Earlier in the week, Ukraine’s Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko stated that Russian strikes had significantly affected Ukraine’s domestic gas production. He added that Ukraine would need to import around 1 billion cubic meters of gas by the end of the year, though he did not provide specifics on the extent of the damage.

At the start of this year, Ukraine ended its agreement with Russia for the transportation of Russian gas to European customers through Ukraine’s pipelines. The agreement had expired at the end of 2024 and was not renewed.
