Turkey and Turkmenistan have signed a significant energy agreement that will allow the transportation of natural gas through Iran, deepening the relationship between Ankara and Ashgabat.
Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced the deal on Tuesday, which involves Turkey’s state-run pipeline operator, BOTAS, and Turkmenistan’s state-owned Turkmengaz.
The agreement, set to begin on March 1, will see Turkmenistan’s natural gas transported to Turkey via Iran’s existing pipeline network. While the exact gas volume and terms of transit through Iran have not been disclosed, last year, the Turkish Energy Minister suggested it could reach up to 2 billion cubic meters (bcm).
Bayraktar emphasized that the deal, which has been in the works for years, would strengthen strategic cooperation between the two countries and enhance Turkey’s energy security and regional supply.
