A hazardous materials response team was dispatched after over 30 gallons of diesel fuel spilled at a gas station in Kildeer, with some believed to have entered the sewer system.
The Long Grove Fire Protection District and Kildeer Police Department responded to the Thorntons station at 20249 North Plum Grove Road around 1:20 p.m. Friday following reports of the fuel spill. According to Long Grove Fire Protection District Battalion Chief John Jaworski, approximately 35 gallons of diesel fuel spilled, based on camera footage and computer data.
The spill caused the fuel to overflow onto the ground, with some likely flowing into nearby sewer drains.
Fire crews applied oil dry to absorb the fuel and placed hazmat pigs around storm drains to prevent further contamination, Jaworski explained. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency was notified of the incident.
Fire departments from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Lake Zurich, Buffalo Grove, and Palatine assisted at the scene. In addition, the Fox Lake Fire Protection District provided coverage for Long Grove’s fire station during the response.
