TROY, Ill. – A fuel leak that occurred over the weekend has led to the closure of a major road in Troy, Illinois, as cleanup efforts continue.
Chief Darren Davis of the Troy Fire Protection District announced that South Main Street, between West Fitch Street and Route 162, will remain closed through Sunday evening, with the possibility of extending into Monday.
The leak was first reported Saturday morning at the BP gas station located in the 800 block of South Main. Firefighters were alerted about the leak just before 8:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, crews quickly identified that the leak was coming from an underground fuel tank. They acted swiftly to prevent the fuel from reaching the storm sewer system and potentially contaminating a nearby creek. To assist with the response, the Madison County HazMat Team, Troy Public Works Department, and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency were called in for support.
As a precaution, businesses north of the leak were evacuated and instructed to close for the remainder of the day. Storm drains, local businesses, and nearby waterways were thoroughly checked for signs of gas or fumes. Chief Davis confirmed that this monitoring will continue for the foreseeable future.
Fortunately, the leaking fuel did not enter the city’s water supply, and public water remains safe for use. However, residents may still notice gas fumes in the vicinity of the leak on Sunday, due to the current weather conditions.
