Ecopetrol Tests Using Petroleum Coke to Improve Forest Soils

by Krystal

Ecopetrol (NYSE: EC) is experimenting with a new use for petroleum coke, a carbon-rich byproduct of refining, to improve soil fertility in forest ecosystems. This initiative is part of the company’s broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and promote a circular economy.

Through its research division, Instituto Colombiano del Petróleo y Energías de la Transición (Icpet), Ecopetrol is conducting a pilot project at its Cartagena refinery. The study aims to assess the impact of petroleum coke as a soil amendment. The experiment involves growing 156 native forest plants, specifically guayacán and cañaguate, in a controlled nursery where the coke-based additive is being tested for its effects on plant growth and soil quality.

Petroleum coke, produced in large quantities at Cartagena—around 3,000 tons per day—has historically been used as an industrial fuel. However, Ecopetrol is exploring an alternative use for this byproduct that aligns with its environmental objectives. The company aims to improve degraded soils, sequester carbon, and boost biomass production in forests.

“We are working to return key nutrients like carbon and magnesium to the soil, while also exploring new biomass energy options,” said Ernesto Gómez, manager of the Cartagena refinery. He highlighted the refinery’s commitment to supporting Ecopetrol’s decarbonization goals through projects that benefit both the environment and Colombia’s agroforestry sector.

The project also seeks to create new biomass energy sources from enhanced forest growth. Icpet director José Vicente Villamizar described the initiative as a major step in promoting sustainable development. “This project is one of our most important contributions to the circular economy, transforming waste into valuable opportunities for local communities and ecosystems,” he stated.

Early results from the pilot suggest improved biomass yields, with final outcomes expected by the end of 2025. If successful, this program could serve as a model for the sustainable use of petroleum coke in other refineries across Latin America.
